THE ART

More than wrestling.

Benjang Gelut is a traditional form of Sundanese wrestling associated with Ujungberung and the communities of East Bandung. Its physical contest is built around balance, leverage, timing, control and the ability to disrupt an opponent’s structure.

Yet the practice developed alongside music, ceremony and community gatherings. To understand Benjang, we must look beyond the arena.

THE ETHIC OF BENJANG
“AN OPPONENT IN THE ARENA.
NEVER AN ENEMY OUTSIDE IT.”

Meunang ngabogaan lawan, tapi teu meunang ngabogaan musuh. The contest is temporary. When it ends, hostility should end with it.

INSIDE THE ARTFIVE PRINCIPLES

Grip. Disrupt.
Control. Throw.

01

BALANCE

Change the opponent’s relationship with the ground.

02

LEVERAGE

Use position and body mechanics where structure is vulnerable.

03

TIMING

Act inside a small opening at the right moment.

04

CONTROL

Build the conditions for a throw through grips and positioning.

05

AWARENESS

Read the person, not only the body.

FROM UJUNGBERUNG

A tradition made
by a community.

Benjang’s roots belong to the communities surrounding Ujungberung in East Bandung. Accounts of its exact beginnings vary, as often happens with traditions passed through a community rather than founded by one person.

Physical contests developed alongside rhythmic movement and performance. Gelut became the wrestling expression, while Helaran and Topeng brought processions and masked theatre into the wider Benjang world.

BEFORE THE FIRST GRIPMOVEMENT / MUSIC / MINDSET

THE ENCOUNTER
BEGINS EARLY.

Ibing Benjang is rhythmic movement performed before wrestling. It expresses readiness and marks a transition from the social gathering to the physical contest. The opponent watches. The crowd watches. The music builds.

WHEN MUSIC ENTERS THE ARENA

Traditional instruments surround the contest with rhythm and collective energy. The wrestling may be between two people, but the event belongs to the community.

HELARAN

A LIVING TRADITION

Preservation means
participation.

Benjang entered a long period of public restriction in Ujungberung from the late 1970s to the end of the 1990s. Practitioners and community leaders later worked to restore events, training and opportunities for younger people.

The art survives because people continue to practise it: teachers, families, musicians, cultural groups and students. Its story includes values and ceremonies as well as techniques.

THE WAI & BENJANG

Tradition lives
through people.

The WAI seeks to learn from the communities carrying Benjang and document the art with respect. More field photography, named teacher relationships and a dedicated film can be added once verified and supplied.
